Regular D2 – The Tried and True Workhorse

The key stats:
- About 1.55% carbon (that's a lot – this stuff gets hard)
- About 12% chromium (just shy of being "stainless")
- Air-hardening, which means heat treat is tricky
- Holds an edge forever
- Can be a pain to sharpen
- Semi-stainless – it'll rust if you're lazy
On paper, it's a solid tool steel. Good edge retention, decent toughness, okay corrosion resistance . Nothing spectacular, but it just works.
The problem with regular D2 is the carbide structure. When the steel solidifies from molten to solid, the carbides – those hard particles that give D2 its edge retention – tend to clump together . They form big, uneven chunks that can create weak spots.
That can make the steel a bit brittle. Not terrible, but noticeable.
CPM D2 – The New Kid on the Block
Then Crucible Industries came along and said "what if we made D2 but... better?"
CPM D2 is the exact same chemical composition as regular D2. I mean exactly the same. Same carbon, same chromium, same everything .
But instead of casting it in an ingot and rolling it out, they use the powder metallurgy process.
The result? Instead of big, chunky carbides clumping together, the carbides are spread out evenly, uniformly, throughout the whole blade .
According to the Crucible metallurgist himself, CPM D2 has "a more uniform microstructure, better polishability, and a little better fracture resistance along the edge than regular D2" .
Translation: better edge stability, less chipping, and it takes a nicer finish.
What the Data Actually Says
So does the fancy powder process actually make a difference? Here's what I've pieced together.
Toughness
This is the main selling point. Regular D2 has a reputation for being a bit chippy – those big carbides make weak spots in the steel. CPM D2's uniform carbide structure means the steel is better distributed, so you don't get those stress concentration points.
One forum user put it bluntly: "There is ingot D2 and CPM D2, CPM D2 obviously being tougher" . And a Crucible representative confirmed "a little better fracture resistance along the edge than regular D2" .
"Little better" being the key phrase here. It's an improvement, not a revolution.
Edge Retention

One source gives regular D2 an edge retention rating of 8 out of 10, and CPM D2 "similar" to that range . It's not S30V levels of retention, but it's respectable.
Corrosion Resistance
This one's interesting. The chemical composition is identical – about 11.5% chromium in CPM D2 vs 11.5-12% in regular D2 . So the corrosion resistance is basically the same.
But the uniform carbide structure might mean there are fewer sites for corrosion to start. A couple of users have reported CPM D2 seems "a bit better corrosion resistance than standard D2" .
It's still semi-stainless. It'll still spot if you neglect it. But maybe slightly less of a drama queen.
Hardness
Same hardness range. Regular D2 hits 59-61 HRC typically . CPM D2 can hit up to 62 HRC, possibly 63 with cryo . A slight bump, but mostly it's about consistency.
The Crucible metallurgist said CPM D2 might get "very slightly higher hardness, maybe 1/2 to 1 point more at best" . So it's a small improvement, not a game-changer.
So Is CPM D2 Actually Better?
Honest answer: yes, but probably not as much as the marketing suggests.
The powder metallurgy process helps with two things:
- Toughness – less chipping and edge failure
- Consistency – the steel performs more predictably
In a real knife, you might notice that your CPM D2 blade is slightly less prone to chipping than a regular D2 blade. But honestly, the differences are subtle.
The knife community on Spyderco's forum agrees: "D2 has been known to chip... M4 is an extremely tough and strong steel" . And regular D2 "can chip" . CPM D2 reduces that risk somewhat.
The Real Question: Is It Worth the Extra Money?

CPM D2 is more expensive to make. The powder metallurgy process is complex, energy-intensive, and Crucible has only run a few batches for the knife industry . "We have not made very much of it, only a couple of heats for knife blade stock" .
That means supply is limited, and the cost gets passed to you.
Is the extra toughness worth the higher price?
For Most People
Probably not. Regular D2 is fine. It's been working for decades. Unless you're specifically pushing knives to their limits – hard use, heavy carving, batoning – you're unlikely to notice the difference.
For Hard Users
Maybe. If you use your knife outdoors, do heavy cutting, or have a habit of hitting staples and knots, the extra toughness could save you from chipping your edge.
For Collectors
Definitely. CPM D2 is rare and interesting. If you like owning something unique, it's worth having in the collection.
For Sharpening Nerds
CPM D2 polishes better . This is a big deal if you're into mirror edges and fine finishes.
The Bottom Line (From Someone Who's Used Both)
Look, I've carried both. Regular D2 and CPM D2. And honestly? Day to day, I can't tell much difference.
When I'm cutting boxes, opening packages, slicing food – the steel is fine either way. Both hold an edge, both need similar maintenance, both are decent.
Where I noticed the difference was in harder use. Slicing thick rope, carving wood, the CPM D2 felt more stable. Less micro-chipping. The edge stayed cleaner.
Is that worth the extra cash? For me, if the price difference is small, I'll take CPM D2. If it's significant, regular D2 is perfectly fine.
